8th graders steal the show at Quarterback Challenge
Showacse Football’s Quarterback Challenge kicked off 2022 in a big way January 22nd at Serra high school in Gardena, CA led by two 2026 prospects in Jaden O’Neal and Devin Rasmussen. The Challenge takes quarterbacks through a series of drills and competition to determine a winner andO’neal was the talk of the event at 6’2 215 and a hose for an arm. “He’s big, strong and obviously has a power arm but what impressed me was his poise and confidence. The moment was never too big for him and he was ready to showcase his talent and compete today” said executive director, Keith Miller. O’neal also showed really impressive athletic ability for his side and arm talent to make every throw from any platform. Though O’neal was the most impressive Quarterback, Devin Rasmussen from Stockton, CA won the actual Challenge by edging out returning champion Jaxon Potter in the final round. “Devin is young but a veteran to Showcase. This is his third event and he just continues to get better and better every time out. Today was his day.” Rasmussen showed off good footwork and accuracy to all levels. He has a quick release and throws a easy ball. Potter, the runner-up was smooth delivering darts all session long. He showed off his new physique as he’s added 20 pounds of muscle since the last time we saw him in Arizona a year ago. Potter also showed the leadership you like to see from upperclassmen by taking charge in drills and setting the tone for competition. “Jaxon is a baller. I think this is the year his recruitment takes off. He looked great today. I’ve been high on him for awhile but sometimes it takes a lot longer for others to jump on board — and that’s ok, too” said Miller.
The event was judged by the Quarterback coaches in attendance and Miller. The coaches included former college quarterback coach and long time offensive coordinator, Noel Mazzone and 1996 heisman finalist and #2 overall pick in the ‘97 NFL draft, Akili Smith.
